Review of The Thin Man (1934) by Rick C — 14 Oct 2006
One of the most flat-out entertaining and fun films ever made. The chemistry and banter between William Powell and Myrna Loy are in a league of their own. The filmmakers clearly agreed with this as in the sequels their relationship becomes the raison d'etre of the films - not the murder plot.
This film takes its time to set up the plot. Nick and Nora are not introduced (what introductions!) until about fifteen minutes into the film. In the five sequels (the first of which, After the Thin Man, co-starring James Stewart is as good if not better than the original) they go straight to Powell and Loy's marvellous characters.
Even the poor final film Song of the Thin Man is well worth watching for the moments of brilliance between them.
