Review of The Thin Man (1934) by Helen D — 07 Jun 2007
Thin Man is perhaps the perfect mystery movie format, but more than that, it is the exceptional on-screen chemistry between Bill Powell and Myrna Loy that makes this such a great film, with quick banter pulled off with a casual ease and clear affection that hasn't really been successfully duplicated since, though god knows Hollywood has tried.
The writing for this movie is brilliant, witty without effort and fresh even after dozens of viewings. The perfect off-center holiday movie or for any other time you just feel like a drink and a laugh.
And in a powerful lesson to the current trend of sequel-making, each movie in this series is an equally strong showing from Nick & Nora that never once loses its footing or its light-hearted mirth.
The Thin Man is a classic that doesn't show its age. An absolute must-see for the movie lover.
