Review of The Thin Man (1934) by Max M — 16 May 2009
Absolutely wonderful and hilarious marriage of screwball comedy and mystery that never gets tiresome.
William Powell and Myrna Loy are perfect as Dashiell Hammett's detectives/socialites Nick and Nora Charles (as well as Skippy who plays their terrier Asta) who become entangled in an investigation into a murder that involves the disappearance of an old acquaintance.
It's easy to see why this brilliant comedic team returned for five more pictures. Powell and Loy's (who had previously worked together in Manhattan Melodrama) hilarious sarcastic, liquor-soaked back and forth (supposedly based on Hammett's relationship with Lillian Hellman) makes it easy to forget that there is an actual plot going on.
