Review of The Thief of Bagdad (1924) by Bob V — 13 Dec 2010
One of the movies that deserves to be seen merely for its importance in cinematic history. Filmed on the biggest set ever erected in Hollywood, back when Hollywood barely meant anything, it propelled the earliest male superstar into uh well, superstardom.
Visually astonishing for its time, it's also more than 2 hours of slightly boring to most people, and the Fairbanks silent acting style is not easy to get behind for the MTV generation.
Nonetheless, when actually viewed with attention, anyone can soon see that this movie is indeed way ahead of its time, and thus shaped the genre, and cinema as a whole, in its image for decades to come.
