Review of The Theory of Everything (2014) by Kelsey M — 06 Mar 2015
Way better than I expected. I loved it but for a few parts. I felt that Jane's character arc was pretty weak. She vacillated between being 100% devoted to being 100% peeved without any real justification.
I get that living with a debilitated individual wears on you, but I wanted to understand more of her personal journey. It was too broad-stroke. I also didn't like the very end, when Hawking had his weird dream sequence of picking up a pen -- it felt unnecessary and didn't add anything.
I also didn't like the lets-do-everything-in-reverse ending. I get that it fits into Hawking's theories about looking at time moving backward to get to the big bang...but the movie didn't go backward to reach a big bang.
It went backward to reach an anticlimactic whimper. Really odd choice. It must have seemed good on paper, but it didn't serve the film well.
