Review of The Theory of Everything (2014) by Chantal V — 22 Mar 2015
Oh how I love a beautifully filmed, aesthetically pleasing movie. You'd think that is pretty standard, a well-filmed film, but it's not often you see a film made in this beautiful, nostalgic tones, great angles and atmospheric scenery.
It makes you want to put all the filming locations (especially Horsted Keynes station) on your travel wishlist. Then there's Redmayne's performance... well I don't really have the words for that, apart from 'utterly impressive'.
Interesting fact is that, whilst it's presented as a biopic about him, it's actually about her, based on her book. Which brings me to the few things I don't like about this movie. I understand why the existence of a god would come up in this film, but I don't like the fact that when Stephen stops adamantly saying there isn't one is presented as a triumph, as if that is the accepted and only right way of thinking.
Also, even though I like its polished look, I think the content is a bit too polished, as the struggles will have been huge but are presented as in an almost "oh well..." fashion that could have been presented more poignantly.
But, still, an amazing watch that won't leave many people untouched.
