Review of The Theory of Everything (2014) by Charly F — 01 May 2015
'The Theory of Everything' - an apt title that undoubtedly attracts some response from any physicist, be it a sign of passionate stride or snide remarks about the pedigree of such theory. And the movie follows one of the most popular and ardent searcher's life who is still fascinated by the notion of a 'theory of everything'.
It would be unjustified not to consider Stephen Hawking's life as a remarkable one and the movie almost effortlessly follows his journey through the doctoral years to celebrity status. The lead pair is the tour-de-force of the movie, Eddie Redmayne's portrayal of Hawking is uncanny and brilliant while Felicity Jones is just as impeccable as Jane Wilde.
The finer nuances of their relationship focus more on Hawking as a human being rather than a celebrity scientist with a robotic voice. A biopic, more often than not, has a chance of overdoing the routine of pointing out, however gently, how extraordinary the character was.
TOE successfully bypassed that to create an ensemble containing a very accessible portrait of a modern great of science - definitely a recommended watch.
