Review of The Theory of Everything (2014) by Subhodeep G — 13 May 2015
The performances of our two leads, particularly Redmayne, are what elevate this into something interesting. Hawking is an intriguing figure with a captivating story that is both tragic and triumphant..
.and yet the films script feels like an average biopic. Redmayne really does give his all as Hawking, and Jones is good in a more reserved way...but something about the movie feels distant from it's subject matter, it never really digs in deep.
..it always feels like it is just scratching the surface of the story. Had the script been slightly more introspective or had actually attempted to let you know who these characters were (other than what we can mostly find out via Wikipedia), then Redmayne's performance would've been even better.
