Review of The Theory of Everything (2014) by Austin G — 17 Aug 2015
One star for the performances from Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones. These two carry the film on their shoulders, which is saying a lot, considering that there are plenty of other major key players. The Theory of Everything follows schoolboy Hawking as he falls in love and becomes world famous.
The film is directed with elegance, avoiding the typical pratfalls that most of these films fall victim to. Redmayne does a good job at portraying the broken Hawking as he tries to keep it together, and Jones does a good job at showing how hard it can be to keep it together.
Unfortunately, these performances are hampered down by a middling second act, spotty side performances, and a lack of focus.
