Review of The Theory of Everything (2014) by Moya W — 19 Mar 2015
This is yet another movie where I desperately tried to read the book beforehand but couldn't manage. In the book everything happened way too quickly and Jane Hawking wrote sentences that were almost impossible to comprehend. So I decided to not read the book and just watch the movie instead. Eddie Redmayne mesmerized me from start to finish. First of all he looks just like Stephen Hawking in the movie if you've seen photos of him in real life. I can imagine that to play someone with ALS must be incredibly hard, and to play someone who has ALS and is still alive who can judge your every move must be even harder. This is a disease that could come out as fake and overplayed if you're supposed to pretend that you have it when you actually don't. But Eddie Redmayne manages with absolute perfection. He is most certainly deserving of the Academy Award. This is an actor to look out for.
Felicity Jones did a great job as well, they both had great chemistry and opened a window to the life of Stephen and Jane Hawking. In the end you feel compassion for them. This was a heartfelt movie about love and science and everything in between.
