This is a fairly basic story that tracks the highs and lows of a couple's relationship over the years.  What makes it non-basic is that one half of the couple has ALS, and is, of course, Stephen Hawking.

Eddie Redmayne deserves all the praise he is getting and more for his incredible performance as Hawking, and not just in how well he portrays the nuances of the disease, but for how he plays the man himself beneath the disease (in my opinion, he should take home the Best Actor trophy).

Felicity Jones is wonderful as well and it can even be argued that she carries the picture, as the film actually focuses more on Jane's experiences than on Stephen's.  This is a sweet movie that is loaded with heart, but it's nothing new.

Although the movie as a whole is very good, it clearly made the list of Best Picture nominees based solely on the strength of its lead performances.
