Review of The Thaw (2009) by Mark N — 28 Mar 2012
The plot had potential even if derivative of The Thing and other 'something in the ice' movies. What stymies it is the stilted dialogue and lack of realistic performances:
Sympathetic people stand and watch a woman they care about apparently choke and do nothing but feel sad she is dying, another is covered in welts and they don't even mention it, they resort to amputation without trying anything first with no preparation or plan for what to do next, when they suspect infection they touch bloody wounds and move bodies with bare hands and jump to conclusions that that couldn't possibly know without reading the script.
That is the level of reality the director manages to give his sparely drawn characters. No one acts or reacts with anything like human emotions and the dialogue flat and derivative. My faveorite line was the randomly stated "Isn't there that frog?" at the sight of a bug on a frozen carcass.
