Review of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006) by Laurence C — 25 Mar 2009
Hugely lacks the supreme bone-chillingness of the original or the vigor of the remake. TCM : The Beginning is still an oddity in its genre for blending the usual slasher ingredients with extended torture porn sequences-- not that it makes the film worth recommending, but remains something rather unusual.
The rest is largely been-there-done-that, with a bare twelve minutes of prequelling followed by gratuitous carnage that's too graphic & gritty to be laughed at. Add to that moments of pure screenwriting laziness (oh, gawd, that ending) and performances that range from 'meh' to 'blah' (even R.
Lee Ermey seems on autopilot), and you've got yourself the obvious final dose of chainsaw massacres in texas for at least a decade.
