Review of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) by Grant S — 18 May 2010
While this is not on par with the original, it does make a pretty good horror movie and an interesting watch. It actually brings the series back to the roots that the other sequels were so trying to get back to.
This movie, however, fails in that the original never needed to be remade. Had this been a sequel to the original, I think it would've been a more effective movie. While the stench of Hollywood still seems present in this movie, the scenery and overall look of the film is very dirty (clean dirty, though.
..not really effective to film dirt when you have an expensive camera). Anyway, the characters and acting are effective if underdeveloped. All in all, it makes a very satisfying sequel but pales in comparison to the original that still haunts viewers even today.
The performances are strong in this remake, but the fact that it is a remake is somewhat depressing because it sets the bar very high for what this movie has to live up to. They probably would've been better off to just make a sequel.
Overall, an effective horror film that is remaking a more effective original should not be made, but it is entertaining to horror fans and other viewers.
