Review of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986) by Tim B — 02 Mar 2009
Lame. I can see why Hooper went in this direction (best not to repeat yourself) but none of the comedy worked. After an impressive opening, it just climbs down the ladder. It's not very funny and although Savini did the effects, I think this is probably his worst work yet.
Leatherface becomes a big loser, The Cook rants a lot and Chop Top (played by the great Bill Moseley) is annoying. The only thing that kept me going was watching Dennis Hopper as Lefty. He's an awesome actor and this one needed a lot more of him.
Caroline Williams was decent and the underground sets were neat. The ending completely smelled of the original. Here, it was way less effective and a little trivial. It's not scary, it's not that funny, and it's a little all over the place.
If phallic chainsaws get you off, this one is right down your alley... others might want to skip it.
