Review of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986) by Paul J — 22 Apr 2012
How can the same filmmaker get something so right the first time and then so wrong the second? Everything that was incredible about the original, Hooper contradicts in this one or just plain exploits. This sequel is so utterly irritating and stupid that it is truly a painful experience to witness.
It's like watching a loved one prostitute themselves. I suppose the approach was more comedic but I ask WHY? They make a total mockery of Leatherface. That said, I do remember seeing this as a child and it felt forbidden because it was rated A (the equivalent of X) in Canada.
I sat watching and wondering, maybe I shouldn't be seeing this? Maybe there's a reason it's rated A? Will it forever damage my young mind? Looking at it now it's just so sad how Hooper butchered the tone of the original classic.
I suppose it does have its followers. Zombie was clearly influenced for his debut House of a Thousand Corpses. Which also happens to be a piece of shit. His Devil's Rejects is far superior.
