Review of The Terminator (1984) by Zak K — 28 Jun 2015
I still think after several viewings of every film in the franchise that this one is the best. With a small budget compared to his other projects he still manages to crank out a very fast paced and entertaining action thriller with cool effects that resembles B-status movies.
The Idea of our own technology turning against us, their makers and takes over the world in the future asks clever social questions about technology and our use of it, which is really relevant still. This has been praised over and over, and really places this film a bit over others within the same genre because of that, which I think it deserves.
Arnold is also a genius casting, with his big muscular body and an accent so ridiculous it must be a bi-product of the machines production of these cyborgs. His job was really to act like a bad actor, really neat.
James Cameron directs this smartly and subtle at first but with an explosive conclusion. The acting isn't really great but you shouldn't expect anything else from this film because it isn't out to achieve that.
After repeated viewings I have also noticed that it is pretty funny and can be seen as a action-comedy, but a good one obviously. This film is fun, smart and generally really well done and is really one of the true great action films ever.
