Review of The Terminal (2004) by Dominic O — 19 Mar 2011
Tom Hanks plays his showiest role as Viktor Navorski, an Eastern European stranded at New York's JFK airport until violence ends in Krakozhia, his fictional homeland. That takes nine months, but it feels like the movie goes on for nine years.
Steven Spielberg directs his sappiest material since 1989's Always. It's got a bad case of the cuteses. The movie plays Viktor's bad English for yucks, and though it's based on the true story of an Iranian refugee who lived at a Paris airport, Spielberg lightens the material and brings in a hard-ass security chief (Stanley Tucci) and a hot flight attendant (Catherine Zeta-Jones).
Everything else plays like Cast Away in an airport, a terrific set it should be said, with dull dialog. It's a misfire.
