Review of The Tenant (1976) by Patxi C — 13 Nov 2009
A movie about paranoia, anxiety, the supernatural, and existential crisis. That, and really bad neighbors. If you thought your neighbors were bad...get a load of this place! Polanski plays himself (and his creepy persona is not helped here), and moves into an apt.
where a woman threw herself out the window. He gets way too interested in the previous tenant, and the other tenants seem way too interested in him. As he slowly goes crazy, you wonder if it's just his paranoia, or the building and it's occupants? The movie is loaded with small details and I felt like it really snuck up on me.
It's creepy, sometimes hilarious, but mostly just weird and fascinating. I really liked it. I can't help but wonder if it really was THAT hard to find a place in Paris back then. He should have just moved!
