Somewhere between thriller and horror, this is a slow-moving film that filled me with a sense of oppressive sadness. A psychodrama, but anyone who has known the loneliness of rented rooms can relate to the protagonist's creeping anxiety as reality is turned upside down.
Written, directed by and starring Roman Polanski - with great supporting performances from movie veterans like Melvyn Douglas, Shelley Winters and Jo Van Fleet.
