Review of The Tenant (1976) by Edgar C — 17 Sep 2009
Le Locataire was a perfect comeback for Polanski's reputation after that masterpiece that we all know of: Chinatown (1974).
As a masterpiece creator that Polanski is, specially in the psychological horror field, like (masterpiece also) Rosemary's Baby (1968), Le Locataire is an extremelly scary, depressing and horrifically shocking horror film without the need of violence. You can clearly see how horrible can be the loss of your own identity, specially when you either have a weak personality, follow patterns of conduct letting your mind falling into them with no consideration over soon or late possible future consequences, or when you quietly fall into desperation, with chaoitic results.
A SCARY (indeed) masterpiece of horror, Polanski really knows how to scare audiences out of their wits in a very original way.
83/100.
