Review of The Ten Commandments: The Musical (2006) by Elise H — 23 Apr 2008
I think it's safe to say that I'm going to be a little biased in this review considering that this film A. has one of my favorite actors: Val Kilmer, and B. is a staged musical (which I love). With that being said, I will try and review this as fairly as possible.
Let's get right to the first point: Val Kilmer is pretty good as Moses, as he should be considering he voice the character in the 1998 film The Prince of Egypt. His character definitely shows it's age and it would have suited him better if he were 10 or 15 years younger at least.
The other leads are respectable but nothing that stands out. The ensemble is top-notch and I really enjoyed them as a whole. The show itself was fairly entertaining and had it's moments but wasn't anything to write home about.
It doesn't help that The Prince of Egypt is a fully scored and beautiful musical in itself and anything in comparison will fall short. There are a few catchy tunes here and there, and it isn't as bad as it could have been.
I'm glad it wasn't a big run on Broadway and it was well-suited for an engagement at the Kodak in Hollywood.
