Review of The Ten Commandments (1956) by James R — 17 Apr 2013
This movie is the definition of EPIC, at 219 minutes, it could have been a disaster. There are so many extras and gigantic sets, and the costumes are simply radiant: the legendary Edith Head is at the top of her game with this one.
Special effects for 1956 are simply stunning: the psycho fire pattern of God, parting the red sea, etc.. Unfortunately, I think too many unenlightened people seeing this will take it as a documentary rather than a piece of fictional entertainment.
Film-wise, the actors seem confused on how to deliver their lines: they switch from speaking in Shakespearian tone to regular 50s movie-speak. There were also at least a couple line-fudges I caught. However, this movie is just so huge, giving it less than four stars scares me that Moses will bash me with his stone tablets.
