Review of The Temptress (1926) by Mitchell W — 24 Dec 2007
The most captivating face ever to grace the screen, it's a shame how awful most of her pictures were. This one's no exception. It starts out rather promising, but then spins out of control into a ludicrous morality tale that unfolds in Argentina before heading back to Paris for a cringing end.
Still, Garbo never looked better than she did in her silents, where her characters often drove men to crime, sin or insanity. The opening sequence where she removes her mask sums up most of her mystery and her appeal.
