Review of The Task (2011) by Joe A — 26 Jul 2011
This is the second reality show themed horror flick I've seen this month and this one is only marginally better then the other. Just as reality TV is actually far from and has a very phoney aura about it (everything seems more scripted then regular shows and no one is themself when they know they're on TV), so do films with a reality show theme.
Since you know these people are all on a TV show even when things go wrong it all seems as much of a set up as the show they are supposed to be in. After all, why make a horror movie about people on a TV show unless things are going to go horribly wrong, right? So, it's no surprise when it does.
Task has a group of cardboard stereotypes (the flamboyant gay, the blonde star wannabe, the black man who speaks perfect ghetto) who are forced to stay overnight in a supposed haunted prison completing tasks generic to shows like they're on.
Only the spirits of the old prison decide to ad lib. It's boring, predicatable and cliche' and even disrupts what little tension there is by interrupting the scenes and cutting to reality show style interviews with the contestants.
Yawn.
