Review of The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) by Pravin P — 09 Feb 2009
Tom Ripley (Matt Damon) has three talents.. Lying, forging signatures and imitating people.. He gets hired by Dickie Greenleaf's (Jude Law) father to bring Dickie back from Italy to run his family business, instead of living a carefree life, which he is currently leading.. The story develops with how Tom befriends Dickie, his girlfriend Marge (Gwyneth Paltrow) and others with his nature and by telling a lot of lies in b/w.. He starts enjoying this lifestyle and then starts taking extreme steps to keep on living it..
The cast itself is amazing.. Damon, Law, Blanchett, Paltrow, Hoffman.. The plot is convoluted, dark, whatever you wanna call it.. There's this beast within Tom that you can see developing over the course over the movie.. The plot has lots of surprises here and there, which you'd most probably never guess and I'd rather not destroy the fun.. The ending was unexpected and I'd have been happier if it was different..
Anyways, a must watch for all movie fans.. The casual viewer might not like it very much coz its got elements of a drama.. Still, give it a try..
