Review of The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) by Garrett O — 13 Oct 2009
A solid four stars. What makes this a personal favorite is the cast, the setting, and Minghella's direction. He took a very good novel and made it better, usually it's the other way around. Minghella was a genius and we see that brilliance played out in the story.
The novel has Ripley as a budding sociopath killing to save his ass. The movie shows us a Ripley whose sexuality, identity, and imagination has no boundaries. The homoerotic leitmotif is intriguing and turns the murder mystery--the novel's story--into a psychological suspense story which is much more powerful.
Matt Damon shows some acting chops that will blow your mind.
