Review of The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) by Kevin Val B — 06 Feb 2010
There's always that part of us that represents our desire to be someone other than who we are. Donning a new look and persona is exciting and rejuvenating, plus there's a hint of taboo to it that only enhances the thrill.
Ripley personifies this desire, although amplified to psychopathic levels, which makes him a strangely root-worthy antihero. We hate him, yet we also want him to get away with what he's done, because we'd do the same if we had Ripley's talent and we understand Dickie's undeniable charisma.
This movie is a testament to cinematic seduction, boosted by its sun-drenched Italian luxury and retro-chic stylishness. Matt Damon and Jude Law also give perhaps the most transfixing performances of their careers.
