Review of The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) by Phil C — 18 Feb 2011
Great movie with a wonderful line in misdirection. Thriller, romance, bromance... I especially like Gwyenth Paltrow whose performance here is her answer to critics of her Oscar winning turn in Shakespeare in Love.
Matt Damon is, perhaps, a little *too* boysih to be a truly convincing Ripley but Jude Law does a fine job of playing himself down and so letting Damon's nuanced work shine through.
Like all of Minghella's work; this is a real actors' film. But this time he has the script to match his own detailed work on extracting interesting performances from all involved.
