Review of The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) by Fernando Rafael Q — 29 Mar 2011
First things first, Philip Seymour Hoffman is among the best character actors to date. But Jude Law's millionaire playboy exceeds all the other performances in the film, even Matt Damon. When Damon's thoroughly creepy and mysterious impersonator comes to Italy, a complicated string of events follow, leading Damon to live two lives, struggling to keep up.
Damon makes one of the creepiest killers of cinema. This is my first Anthony Minghella film, but I know he's pretty legendary in Hollywood, and I can see why. Excellent performances by the whole cast.
B+.
