Review of The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) by Liz — 05 Oct 2010
Is it better to be a fake somebody or a real nobody?
From the start we are hooked into the artsy, contemporary, and thrilling "Talented Mr. Ripley".
Tom Ripley is an average joe who just happens to play piano, and his entire adventure started because he borrowed a jacket from a Princeton graduate. From that point on his story twists, turns, and lurches to amazing places, and keeps you on the edge of your seat, and in the back of the chair crying, laughing, and reeling.
Matt Damon went places no other actor could've gone, he was truly vulnerable, and he was hidden. Tom Ripley is one of the most intriguing characters ever written for screen, or for novel sake.
Jude Law was facsinating, and fantastic as Dickie Greenleaf. The character was bursting at the seams with charisma and something much more sinister.
Gwyneth Paltrow blew me away with her stunning, and heart-felt performance. At the start of the film she was lively and beautiful, and at the end she made you want to cry she was so intense.
Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jack Davenport, and Cate Blanchett were all wonderful and unique additions to the story. They made it flow and if they had been anyone else the movie would've been unsucsessful. Each role was perfectly cast.
Anthony Minghella was magnificent! The odd angles, and the contemparary colors, and shots were so interesting. Watching the cuts, and the transitions, not to mention the choices in opening the movie. It was fantastic.
The music was so lively and upbeat, yet at points thrilling and murderous. It complemented the story line perfectly.
OVERALL THERE WAS NOTHING I WOULD CHANGE AND IT HAS TO BE ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES EVER. I LOVED IT WITH ALL MY HEART-- A MUST SEE.
