The first time I watched The Talented Mr Ripley, I was a little disgusted with it. And myself for rooting for the eponymous character. But after the second viewing, I realized that it wasn't an accident that I rooted for Ripley, that Minghella wanted us to root for him.
And eventually, after the second and third and twentieth viewing, I let go of that disgust and just let myself be taken into the story. A brilliantly directed and acted film.
