Tom Ripley is one of these natural Matt Damon roles. He's somewhere between Good Will Hunting and The Informant! with a slight psychopathic streak.
Ripley is a forger, liar and impersonator and he's pretty good at it. These are the eponymous talents of him. Besides, he's akiller - calm and boyish - but a killer.
He first uses his talents to get on a paid trip to Italy to bring back the son of a rich shipping magnate. Instead of bringing him home though he befriends Dickie, the son, (Jude Law) and his girlfriend (Gwyneth Paltrow), lives on the expenses of them and even moves in with the couple. As Dickie gets tired of Tom soon liches pave Tom's way when he begins to execute his masterplan.
A nice mystery thriller, just a bit too much in every aspect. One murder too much he gets away with, one character too much that makes it overly complicated, twenty minutes too much running time. Damon is great and he has a splendid supporting cast but director Anthony Minghella overstates the case.
