Review of The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) by Sebastian K — 13 Dec 2010
This film is sheer genius in every way - One of the 5 best movies I have ever seen in my life. It should have won the Oscars for best film & best actor that year. I literally think it didn't because it was SOOoo perfectly done, it transcended "entertainment" and just really freaks you out.
..100% creepy + 100% believable...wrapped up in layers of beauty, wistfulness, character development of near perfection, and a 100% fully realized tale of the bon vivant life of young ex-pats in the 1950's - europe amidst a tormenting psychological cascade of self-awareness & horror.
The characters and story slowly & perfectly grow & evolve until you are witness to a passage so dark & horrifying in brutal honesty & believability that you literally cringe in your seat as the subtle psychological needles stick you over & over again.
..I walked out of the theater saying, "Oh my god...that was absolutely brilliant; and I don't want to see it again anytime soon." - THAT is how unhinged, horrified & unsettled it will leave you.
Truly a work of art rare to see in the modern era. Perfectly cast, brilliantly written, imagined, and filmed. If you don't completely love this film, it is simply because you're not very clever i'm afraid.
Sorry, but it's been a consistent fact 100% of the time so far that i've seen.
