Review of The Tale of Despereaux (2008) by Katie C — 26 May 2009
I'm happy they made it with as much integrity and warmth as they did...but the film itself lacked a depth which underlied the story. It was almost like they tried to fit too many story lines in without enough time to really make us care about them.
The exception was the plot involving the Dustin Hoffman rat--that was the highlight of the film. How often to we get to see well-made G rated movies anymore? It's a lost art apparently. But hey, Despereaux is worth watching once in your life.
I just feel that it missed its potential to be a much more mature and thoughtful depiction of an already rich story.
