Review of The Tale of Despereaux (2008) by Rob C — 05 May 2009
Charming on the order of that "Nutcracker Prince" cartoon that we see every Christmas on television, but not a classic, or even really good movie. The animation of the humans looks cheap and out of place compared to the mice, rats, and other scenery, the pacing is terrible, the main theme of nobility is never really clearly pursued to its end, and the idea that a drought would cause the skies to be perpetually clouded is a little far-fetched.
Not that there aren't other far-fetched things going on here, but any world, even a fantasy world, should make some sort of sense within its own boundaries. The points I previously mentioned, along with the inexplicably random inclusion of a man made entirely out of fruit, need some sort of explanation and, in any event, distract the viewer from the more important parts of the movie.
