Review of The Tale of Despereaux (2008) by Derek S — 27 Dec 2009
"The Tale of Despereaux" starts out good but then it gets derailed at about 20-30 minutes into it. This is the second film about mice or rats that director Sam Fell has done in a row. The story can get really boring near the middle of the film, even though you know what's happening and all you just get bored with it and you know how it's going to turn out.
I don't want to call it a rip-off of "Ratatouille" or "Flushed Away" because this was clearly written before both of those and is based off of the novel, but if I had to compare the three, this would be at the ladder end of the bunch.
I really wanted to like this film and get into it more than I was able to but it just didn't work out for me. I also didn't care for the casting, there were some really good actors in this but they just seemed out of place and the voice-over work didn't seem to work out that well.
