Review of The Tale (2018) by Eli T — 01 Jun 2018
The only reason I am not giving this 5 stars is the deeply disturbing story. It is so well done, but I wanted to yell at the young Jenny, "NO! Don't believe him!" all the while knowing that she would, and knowing why.
He is so skilled, and so manipulative it is truly frightening. My heart breaks for the film maker who lived through this story. What a thought provoking piece on memory and our past. The scenes where they drop out of the story and speak to each other are revelatory.
Laura Dern is amazing in the title role, and I hope she will be remembered come Oscar time. The actress playing young Jenny is also astonishing. I kept wondering how this child actress could handle the emotions of some of the scenes, and the parent in me worried for her.
(As they mentioned in the credits, adult body doubles were used for any sexual scenes.) I just ran across this movie looking for something to watch, and at the end, I was both glad and disturbed.
