Review of The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974) by Thomas G — 27 Jul 2008
You want to know where Quentin Tarantino got some of his ideas for Reservoir Dogs? By the time you watch The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, you'll know the answer.
One of the more overlooked heist classics brought to us from the 70's, Pelham gives us outstanding and very humorous performances from Walter Matthau and my personal favorite Robert Shaw. They both deliver a lot of one-liners, helping the slow burn pace of the film tolerable.
The use of the subway train as a resource for the heist was very intriguing. From the beginning I was endlessly trying to guess how the hell were they gonna get away with this? Just when you think you've figured it out, something else happens.
Sargents heist film unravels slowly, but I appreciated what it delivered. It's smart, funny, well scripted, and features memorable performances from Shaw and Matthau. It's one for the ages.
