Review of The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974) by Jt K — 11 Jun 2009
Intense hostage thriller from the 70's that's getting some deserved attention because of its modern-day remake. This is a small, tightly-wound flick that is very much a product of its time--filled with gritty realism and a deeply cynical sense of humor.
Great performance all-around, simple but propulsive direction (from the guy that would go on to helm Jaws: The Revenge of all things. ACK!), and an economical use of action (no unnecessary chases or explosions) with little fat around the edges (though some of the scenes with an ineffectual mayor seem extraneous).
The ending is a little too low-key, but the back-and-forth between the kidnappers and the Transit Authority that take up the bulk of the film more than make up for it.
