Review of The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974) by Juan C — 20 Mar 2010
The taking of Pelham One Two Three is a fantastic action film with a gritty, yet hilarious 70's vibe jive-turkeying throughout. The setup of a hijacked subway cart is interesting and the film continues to deliver with several interesting elements, including the mysterious snipers, the undercover policeman, and the mystery of how exactly the gang plan to escape.
Mr Blue, as the lead villain, delivers a fine performance of someone who is calculating and evil. Tarantino of course picked up on the naming conventions for Reservoir Dogs from this film.
The film has a nice stripped back feel to it. The characters simply exist and don't have to be provided with an unnecessary backstory or motivation. I can really only imagine how Tony Scott has morphed this into something horrid.
The last shot is a classic. Gesundheit indeed.
