Review of The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974) by Reg A — 13 Feb 2010
Watched the original "Pelham 123" on TCM last night. I haven't seen the recent remake with Denzel Washington & John Travolta, but to be honest I'm in no hurry to, since I find it hard to believe they could have surpassed this classic movie.
It has been labelled by some as "dated" - but to me, that's part's of this movie's charm. It's like viewing a time capsule, where one can savour mid-Seventies New York city, as the legendary Walter Matthau matches wits with the meticulous (and equally legenday) Robert Shaw, leader of a small group of hijackers, who sieze a subway train and holds the passengers for a million dollar ransom.
