Review of The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974) by Jay M — 25 May 2009
Awesome train hijacking thriller. I watched this because Tony Scott is doing a remake and I am in the process of watching all of his films. I always perfer to watch the original before any remake ever since I made the mistake of watching Quarantine before [Rec].
Four armed men hijack a New York City subway car. They demand ONE MILLION DOLLARS (queue Dr. Evil) within an hour, or they will start killing off a hostage for every minute it is late. It's up for Walter Matthau to save the day.
This is a fun crime movie with perfect pacing; you're never bored at any point in the film. Walter Matthau is the most recognizable face in the movie, and he does good work, but it's Robert Shaw that steals the show.
His icy cold accent is perfect for a menacing hijacker; John Travolta has his work cut out for him if he wants to match the show that Shaw puts on. Worth seeking out.
