Review of The Tailor of Panama (2001) by Roland J — 21 Dec 2008
The first thing I noticed was the horrendous Blu-Ray transfer, but this eventually becomes mostly a non-factor due to the thoroughly entertaining nature of the picture. It is a wonderful story of lies, betrayal, and greed.
There are some ridiculously funny moments that can't help but make one think of films like Dr Strangelove. It's a rather absurdist view of collision between the worlds of politics and intelligence.
I'm as close as I've been to HUMINT in my current position, but I've still never heard anything quite like what the tailor dishes out (with one possible exception, but in that case it actually turned out to be true).
This is fascinating and foreign world filled with well-drawn characters. It also doesn't hurt that Brosnan comes loaded with all the connotations one brings to the character of James Bond. No one makes stories quite like Le Carre.
Endlessly clever and entertaining.
