Review of The Sword of Doom (1966) by Brayden B — 07 Jun 2007
My kind of samurai movie. He's a samurai rudeboy and he dont care who's toes he steps on. Tatsuya Nakadai hacks his way through his fellow students, his fellow assasins and just about everybody that gets in his way. He is the ultimate anti hero, a true nihilist dedicated only to the sword. It is possible that his sword is tainted as his irrational actions begin to catch up with him which begins his descent into madness. Its the first of a trilogy that was never finished and only a small section of one of the longest books ever written but although it proves to be inconclusive there is much film food for thought to mull over long after the final battle. This is a real slice of samurai culture with incredible sword fighting scenes that accentuate the themes and mirror the soul of the relentless anti hero.
Boring if you dont appreciate swordplay, samurais, nihilism and meditative direction.
If you liked...
Seven Samurai.
The Good, Bad & Ugly.
Mad Max.
Devils Rejects (theme not style).
