Review of The Sword in the Stone (1963) by Chris H — 14 Nov 2013
The Sword in the Stone is a good Disney film with very nice, but very conventional animation, and a charming story about finding your place in this world, which is a common Disney theme. I like the film, however, when ranking Disney films, it is probably near the bottom; it just doesn't really have anything new to offer in almost all areas except the songs, which are far better as a whole than almost all of the previous Disney films songs.
This was Disney's second film using Xerox cells for coloring instead of hand-inking, the first being 101Dalmatians, this film is much more colorful than its predecessor, but it is definitely a lesser film.
This film also marks the beginning of somewhat of a decadence in the quality of Disney films, a trend that would continue until the Renaissance. I'm not saying all the films after this were bad, they were good, but they couldn't quite achieve the same Disney magic.
Back to The Sword in the Stone, it is a film that Disney lovers, like myself, will think is pretty good, but if your not, then you may be struggling to find any ambition in the animation and storytelling to praise.
However, you may love its clever lyrics, wonderful atmosphere, and witty dialogue.
