Review of The Swimmer (1968) by Terri H — 07 Dec 2008
An interesting and adventurous movie for its day. A little more backstory might help, as to just why Neddy decides to swim across all the county's pools is never really determined, leaving you feeling slightly confused.
It is clear though, that he has neglected his family and friends, had affairs and generally been a bit of an idiot. Yet he has somehow lost track of time through his love of swimming in other people's pools, not realising that people he once regarded as friends now hold grudges, and he's not really the man he thinks he is.
Having only seen The Swimmer once many years ago, I did enjoy it a second time round, and it is clearly one of a kind with a brilliantly irritating performance from Burt Lancaster throughout.
