Review of The Sweetest Thing (2002) by Tanguy B — 02 Nov 2011
Funny at one angle. Pretty gross and offensive at another. Not a teaching of good morals for women, but this sexy comedy is pretty funny.
The sexy team of Cameron Diaz, Christina Applegate and Selma Blair star as 3 club-hopping friends who live for picking up guys and throwing them out. But Christina (Diaz) bumps into a nice guy at a club who asks her to come to a wedding party. Christina declines, but regreats the decision. So her and her friend go all the way out to the guy's home town for the wedding to get together with him. I can't believe this movie was written by Ben Stein's sidekick, Nancy Pimental. And she wrote episodes for South Park. So you'll know that this movie will deliver some good laughs. Diaz, Applegate and Blair are good at the comedy job and perfect for those kinds of roles. But where South Park's reputation of demoralizing comedy is appropriate, The Sweetest Thing is a horse of a different colour. Maybe it's not supposed to be a good example for women, but it crosses a line where there are no lessions or morals to learn from this movie.
Roger Kumble does a pretty good job at directing this crazy comedy. The pacing is pretty appropriate to the story, all goofy and a little offbeat, which works well with the hilarious dialogue and comedy. (if you watch then you'll see what I mean) The comedy is captured pretty well. The cinematography is appropriate, light, and average. This movie offers good looking sets, costumes, shooting locations, and an ok soundtrack.
The Sweetest Thing isn't a movie for you if you want something you'll learn a good lesson from afterwards. The characters are pretty horrible. But the shenanigans they get into is pretty funny, and the dialogue is pretty hilarious at times too.
