Review of The Sweetest Thing (2002) by Billy B — 26 Jul 2011
Christina and friends aren't looking for Mr Right. They're looking for Mr Right Now, but after Christina meets a guy in a club, she starts to like him, and she and friends travel over three hours to find him. Could he be her Mr Right?.
Good. In tradition of American Pie and other teen comedy's, the film is more of a comedy than a chick-flick. Although I didn't full-on laugh, there were some moments that made me chuckle a little. It has all the basic ingredients for the genre, but it's very thin plot leaves the audience questioning why some scenes were necessery (including a movie montage that had nothing to do with anything, and a musical number that was just unrealistic). I expect these types of films to be realistic where possible, but the fact that a giant musical number about penises (which was somewhat funny) where a whole restaurant joins in was just over-the-top ridiculous. It was enjoyable enough to consider it fresh, and It's something to watch when your bored, or to have it playing in the background whilst your doing something else.
The story is from a womans point-of-view, and it's in vein of Sex and The City and several other shows for women. The character's were likeable, but it lacked character development, and socialising with the 3rd friend who, to me, seemed like she had no purpose what-so-ever.
The acting was good. Genre familiar Cameron Diaz was the stand-out, bringing her bubbly personality and skills, along with great looks and enthusiasm to the role of Christina. Christina Applegate plays the best friend Courtney, and whilst I was surprised how well of a job she did, I felt like she could've done alot more for the role. Selma Blair's Jane was a very underused character, just like she is an underrated actress. Her scenes were all funny and she lit up the screen with her innocence.
Overall The Sweetest Thing is a watchable comedy that you may chuckle over a few times and is enjoyable, but it lacks character development and plot that could've made it so much better. My rating is 3/5.
