Strong visuals and performances. The department it really lacked in was story - I admire that it wasn't serving us everything on a silver platter, but it needed a little more to make everything truly matter.
I never got a sense of the stakes until the third act; everything else was merely a depiction of the loss itself, but with few attempts to have the audience empathize with the characters.
